Sunday also marks Qiufen in the Chinese lunar calendar, which signifies the deepening of autumn, with cooler air masses from the north starting to spread southward.

Qiu means “autumn” and fen means “divide” in Chinese.

The Hong Kong Observatory predicted showers and thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday, influenced by a broad trough of low pressure over the northern part of the South China Sea and a northeast monsoon affecting the coastal area.

“It will be windy [on Monday], showers will be more frequent at times,” the forecaster said. “The minimum temperature will fall to about 23 degrees in the urban areas, and a couple of degrees lower in the New Territories.”

The showers will ease off gradually, with the weather getting brighter in the middle and latter parts of this week.
