Hong Kong authorities have urged residents to stay away from slopes after a landslide forced a road to close and damaged a lamp post, warning that a tropical cyclone may continue to bring rain in the coming days.

The Geotechnical Engineering Office of the Civil Engineering and Development Department called for vigilance on Sunday afternoon, just hours after the landslide struck at a man-made slope near Sam Tam Lo on Bride’s Pool Road in Tai Po at about 6am.

The office posted drone shots of the site on social media that showed landslides also occurred at the natural hillside behind the man-made slope.

“These two incidents illustrate that both man-made slopes and natural hillsides are susceptible to the effects of heavy rainfall, with a delayed impact,” the office wrote.

“Everyone should stay vigilant after the heavy rain. Staying away from slopes and avoiding trips to rural areas are the most effective ways to reduce risks.”
