Hongkongers under sweltering heat alert as temperatures may soar above 35 degrees Celsius

Hong Kong raised a “very hot weather” warning on Wednesday, as parts of the New Territories were expected to swelter in temperatures of more than 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) this week.
“[It will be] very hot during the day with a maximum temperature of around 34 degrees in the urban areas and a couple of degrees higher in the New Territories,” a spokesman for the Hong Kong Observatory said.
The Observatory added that a subtropical ridge was bringing fine weather to southeastern China. The city was expected to see sunny periods and some showers on Wednesday.
The weather will remain persistently hot during the coming few days with more showers over the weekend and early next week.
At 8am, the mercury rose to 29 degrees at the Observatory’s Tsim Sha Tsui headquarters. Yuen Long Park recorded the highest temperature at 31 degrees, while seven locations across the city, including Sai Kung and Happy Valley, reached 30 degrees.
The forecaster urged residents to replenish their water supply regularly during both indoor and outdoor activities. They should also avoid prolonged sunlight exposure sunlight, apply sunscreen and wear light clothing if possible.
Those who feel nauseous, develop a headache, dizziness or shortness of breath should rest and seek medical help immediately.
