Vegans and vegetarians, rejoice – new app ‘soo where to eat’ has you covered in Hong Kong
The English and Chinese app covers restaurants and vegan grocery shops all over Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, and is available for Apple and Android phones
A new bilingual phone app called “soo where to eat” lists vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Hong Kong. The app, which is free to download, helps diners find restaurants near them offering plant-based dishes.
The list of restaurants – which is available in English and Chinese – covers Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, ensuring that foodies can find appropriate dining options throughout the city. The app also features vegan shops and grocery stores.
Environmental and health-related concerns are among the reasons more people in Hong Kong are opting for vegan food. This app will also be useful for Hong Kong’s growing “flexitarian” population.
Flexitarianism is an option for people looking to reduce their carbon footprint and reap the health benefits of eating more plant-based foods, but who still want to enjoy an occasional meat or dairy dish. This predominantly plant-based eating regimen has grown in popularity as awareness increases of the environmental impact of animal livestock farming.
Greater awareness of the health benefits from increased fruit and vegetable intake have led to reduced meat consumption. Replacing meat and dairy with plant-based sources of protein, such as lentils and beans, reduces high cholesterol and the risk of cancer. Health Canada’s new food guide has removed milk and dairy products from the list of “healthy foods”, and recommended plant-based protein instead.
According to the latest 2018 survey commissioned by Green Monday, nearly a quarter of Hongkongers are practising flexitarians, and 70 per cent are willing to adopt a flexitarian diet. In line with global trends – statistics that indicate more people are receptive to a plant-based diet than before.
The new app is useful for Hong Kong diners who are eating more vegan and vegetarian meals and want to buy plant-based groceries. Comprehensive information about restaurants and retailers clarifies whether an establishment is fully plant-based.
