The hotel is a breath of fresh air spread across 5 restored palazzi along the Grand Canal and a stone’s throw from St Mark’s Square

The Italian city of Venice has evolved into a well-oiled tourist machine over the years – it’s been rechristened Veniceland for a reason – and with that has come an ever-growing list of luxury hotels, from historic grand dames to dark and sexy renovated palazzos. Whenever a newcomer arrives on the scene the bar is set exceptionally high, as was the case when famed New York brand The St Regis opened its doors in 2019.

As soon as the hotel comes into view from my water taxi, I can see why it stands apart from nearby competitors like the Gritti Palace and Hotel Danieli. Made up of five palazzi – including the historic Hotel Europa and Regina – it also boasts one of the largest water frontages in the city, with three expansive outdoor terraces and rooms with balconies. It also occupies an enviable location right on the Grand Canal, overlooking the picturesque Santa Maria della Salute church.

The buildings that make up the hotel may be steeped in history, but their interiors are fresh and modern, and a welcome change from the typical opulent style you’ll find in other five-star hotels. The cosy and intimate lobby is connected to a series of chic rooms including a library, and pays homage to design master Carlo Scarpa. It is decorated with Venetian touches such as stucco walls and original terrazzo flooring.

This bright and airy feel continues through to the 163 rooms and suites. I feel as though I’ve won the lottery when I enter my expansive suite which is flooded with light and boasts a jaw dropping view of the Grand Canal. The decor is decidedly chic – think graphic carpets, printed wallpaper, colourful art and mid-century Italian furniture in hues of blue and pink, while luxe touches like fresh flowers, a marble bathroom with a free-standing tub and a walk-in wardrobe make it feel like a home away from home. The St Regis’ signature butler service is another great perk and includes complimentary pressing, unpacking and coffee delivered to your room each morning.

While I had planned to visit the Biennale over the following days, I am surprised to discover incredible artworks dotted throughout the hotel selected by St Regis’ art curator. Many are the result of collaborations with Murano-based glassmakers Berengo Studio – the hotel even arranged a complimentary visit to their museum and workshop which was a major highlight. They are known for collaborating with high profile artists such as Jaume Plensa and Ai Weiwei – the latter designed my favourite piece at the hotel, a traditional Venetian white chandelier featuring his signature cheeky middle finger, which hangs in the main lobby.
