Review / Conrad Singapore Orchard, a luxury update of a storied tradition: a look inside the newly rebranded former Regent Singapore that promises a best-in-class hotel experience for modern-day travellers
For decades, the Regent Singapore had been a source of fond memories for long-time travellers to Singapore and residents of the city alike, charming guests with its welcoming vibe and array of eateries.
The property opened in 1982 as the Pavilion InterContinental Hotel before becoming the Regent Singapore, managed by Four Seasons Hotel, in 1992. The hotel underwent a refurbishment in 2022 and reopened in 2023 as Conrad Singapore Orchard, managed by Hilton.
The soaring skylit atrium, with its chandeliers and balconies filled with plants, has remained pretty much unchanged while the rooms and restaurants, which were in need of some sprucing up, underwent a thorough makeover.
Unsurprisingly, the two main restaurants that had previously attracted loyal customers to the original property have returned as part of the refurbishment. Summer Palace, the Michelin-starred Cantonese fine dining establishment still helmed by Hong Kong-born chef Liu Ching-hai, offers tasty dishes such as steamed Chilean sea bass with oatmeal green pepper sauce, and braised inaniwa noodle with lobster, scallop and conpoy, which are also available as part of a delightful set menu paired with teas.
Basilico, the more casual Italian eatery, is always buzzing with guests enjoying its buffet and making a beeline for its well-known cheese room. For a nightcap, stop by Manhattan, one of Asia’s 50 Best Bars, which delivers some of the most inventive cocktails in town.
The hotel also offers experiences for those who want to make the most of the neighbourhood. If you’re a foodie and a fan of the great outdoors, sign up for the Edible Garden Walk with Gastrogeography of Singapore, a foraging tour of the Botanic Gardens.
To make sure you get a good night’s sleep, the hotel also offers the Sleep to Wake Turndown Ritual, a great way to end the day with a cup of tea blended with native herbs and served with berries.
- Located between Orchard Road and the Singapore Botanic Gardens, with Singapore Edition and Artyzen Singapore next door, the refurbished hotel caters to loyal customers of the Regent and first-timers
- Two popular restaurants of the former hotel have stayed on: the Michelin-starred Cantonese fine-dining establishment Summer Palace helmed by chef Liu Ching-hai, and Basilico, the casual Italian eatery
