Some top spots around the world where you can relax and enjoy a host of cultural and tourist attractions

As the holiday season approaches, STYLE looks at five less well-known locations where travellers can kick back and enjoy a host of cultural and tourist attractions.

Mexico City, Mexico

The sprawling Mexican capital can seem daunting at first, but contains absolutely idyllic pockets among its 16 boroughs, spread across the city’s 1,479 sq km. The tree-lined, cafe-culture-rich neighbourhoods of La Condesa and Roma – the latter of which was made famous by Alfonso Cuarón’s Oscar-nominated film of the same name – are havens, as is the sleepy southern neighbourhood of Coyoacan, home to the Casa Azul, the former residence of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, Mexico’s two most revered artists.

Juarez, which borders on Roma, where the buzzing Zona Rosa nightlife district is located, and the Centro Historico, which boasts a host of cultural and tourist attractions, are also popular destinations.

Cape Town, South Africa

It’s hard to imagine a more breathtaking location for a major city. Perched on the African continent’s southern tip, Cape Town’s skyline is dominated by the awesome Table Mountain, and the city has long been a cultural touchstone, as well. Cape Town is bustling, and its downtown is well known for its street cafes, bars and restaurants. Wine lovers can travel to the nearby Stellenbosch region, and day trips from the city offer some truly unforgettable experiences for nature lovers, from safaris and penguin-watching, to swimming with seals and – for the truly bold – great white sharks.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Nowhere can claim Latin culture quite as strongly as Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, and its largest city. From the ever-present sounds of salsa, to steak dinners washed down with Argentinian Malbecs, the city is a distillation of everything Argentinian and is passionate, cultured and cosmopolitan.
