In today’s dating world, apps are the most popular way to make connections. Now people can swipe right, Tinder-style, to find the perfect pet.
This month, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) launched the Adoption Date mobile app, Hong Kong’s first dating-style mobile app for animal adoption.
The app allows users to swipe right on animal profiles, opening the door to a potential connection that could lead to an in-person meeting, says SPCA community director Jenmon Jenkins.
“We purposely designed the app for a real discovery experience so that users can explore all kinds of animals that are available for adoption at the SPCA, including dogs, cats and other small animals,” says Jenkins.

In Hong Kong, animal abandonment is not uncommon, says Jenkins.
“Unfortunately, the adoption rate remains low post-pandemic due to travel and emigration, resulting in the SPCA’s dog kennels reaching full capacity,” she adds.
“To keep up with people’s busy lifestyle, and inspired by the modern approach to how dating apps can bring humans together, we are thrilled to introduce our new app.”

Each animal has a profile featuring its photo, name, age, breed, kennel location and other information. Users can swipe right if an animal appeals and can then make plans to visit the designated shelter for a meet-up.
To mark the app’s launch, the SPCA will hold a Dog Adoption Date event on February 24 at pet store Petisan in Sheung Wan on Hong Kong Island, where participants will get to meet rescue dogs from SPCA adoption centres.
The Adoption Date app is available to download at the App Store for iPhone and Google Play for Android.
