Why Hong Kong Repertory Theatre’s gripping drama Ambiguous is back on stage – and touring Beijing and Shanghai
After numerous wins at the 2022 Hong Kong Drama Awards, HKRep’s Cantonese-language play – about an ambiguous relationship between a housewife and a stay-at-home husband – is back at Hong Kong City Hall Theatre, ahead of a mainland tour
The critically acclaimed play Ambiguous, which premiered in 2021, is set to be staged once again by the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre. Written by Matthew Cheng Kwok-wai and directed by Fong Chun-kit, the production explores the complexities of marriage and relationships through a narrative of twists and turns.
The story revolves around Chan Chi Yung, a stay-at-home husband, and Wang Xia, a housewife, who meet by chance outside a kindergarten. As they engage in daily casual conversations, an ambiguous relationship develops between them. The play, which runs from September 13 to 22 at the Hong Kong City Hall Theatre, delves into the nuances of married life, suggesting that seemingly normal and cordial interactions may conceal deeper, more troubling undercurrents.
Ambiguous is an intriguing reflection on human relationships, with thought-provoking questions aplenty about whether the institution of marriage truly elevates the soul or if it is merely a societal construct for easier governance.
Headlining the cast is Lau Shau-ching, who serves as assistant artistic director at HKRep and has earned a bevy of accolades at the Hong Kong Drama Awards; he stars opposite Zhao Yiyi, a graduate of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and winner of best supporting actress at the 26th Hong Kong Drama Awards in 2017.
When Ambiguous premiered, overwhelming demand resulted in the addition of standing room. The play has garnered several awards, including best original script and outstanding production of the year at the Hong Kong Drama Awards in 2022, and best playwright for Cheng at the 2023 Shanghai One Drama Awards.
Following its Hong Kong run, the production will tour Shanghai and Beijing in October.
