Shanghai food writer turns to YouTube to bring ‘amazing’ Chinese cuisine stories to world

Christopher St. Cavish is known for writing about soup dumplings. His new video series spotlights foods around China and those behind them

“Some call him the [Anthony] Bourdain of China,” food writer Michael Maclaren once said of Christopher St. Cavish.

Asked at the time how he felt about the comparison by Maclaren, a contributor to Time Out Shanghai magazine, St. Cavish laughed and said, self-effacingly, “Maybe one day I’ll get there! But [Bourdain] was way more talented than me.”

Soft-spoken and with salt-and-pepper hair and beard, St. Cavish is a household name in Shanghai, where he has lived since 2005.

He is revered as a writer, researcher and private food-tour guide specialising in Chinese cuisine.

From painstakingly putting together the viral Shanghai Soup Dumpling Index in 2015 to penning a memoir published in 2023, his projects have been closely followed by the public, especially those obsessed with Chinese food.
