No other Hong Kong brand captures the spirit of the city like Shanghai Tang, the luxury fashion house that was founded in 1994 by Hong Kong businessman David Tang Wing-cheung.

Tang, who died in 2017, wanted a label that paid homage to the Chinese fashions of the 1920s and 1930s. Not surprisingly, the cheongsam – the figure-hugging dress also known as qipao – became a signature item: actress Maggie Cheung Man-yuk wore several of them in director Wong Kar-wai’s 2000 film In the Mood for Love.
To celebrate the brand’s 30th anniversary, an exhibition is being held at PMQ in Central, on Hong Kong Island, until December 15.
