Sneakers can be traced to 1860s England, where they were worn by the croquet-playing upper class. At the time function, not fashion, was their purpose.

Not any more. Today, the fashion-forward sneaker culture is huge, with the global market forecast to reach more than US$100 billion in revenue by 2026, according to data research firm Statista.

The industry was turbocharged by the 1985 release of the Nike Air Jordan 1s, named after NBA star Michael Jordan. Sneakers also found fans in the world of hip-hop music, a testament to which is Nike’s partnership with American rap group Wu-Tang Clan for a new line of their Dunk sneakers.
