Hong Kong schools have a bullying problem. Cast of Heathers, a musical based on the 1988 cult film, hope to get audiences talking about it
- Heathers, a Hong Kong musical playing at Freespace this month, has a storyline about bullying, a growing problem in Hong Kong schools, and youth suicide
- During rehearsals for the show, some of the cast opened up about their own experiences of bullying. They expect seeing Heathers to spark more such conversations
Theatre and music are powerful mediums for raising awareness about important social issues. And Hong Kong’s Amusix Productions is doing just that with its musical, Heathers, based on the 1988 cult classic film of the same name starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater.
Heathers, which will be performed at Freespace in the West Kowloon Cultural District on May 13 and 14, tells the story of Veronica Sawyer, a senior at the fictional Westerburg High who desperately wants to belong to the group of cool “It girls” known as Heathers.
The group is so called because the three existing members of the clique share the same first name.
But there’s a catch. To be accepted by the Heathers, Sawyer must put on her “mean girl” pants, become a bully, and turn against those she once called friends.
Without spoiling the plot, someone is accidentally killed and the death is attributed to suicide.
