Hong Kong’s higher education is rightfully said to be among the best in Asia, and it has been given another boost following the conversion of a private institution into a university.

Hopefully, the city’s status as a regional education hub will be further reinforced. Permission for the Caritas Institute of Higher Education to rename itself as Saint Francis University not only recognises the work of the Catholic postsecondary college, but also gives hope to others aiming to do the same.

It becomes the city’s fourth private varsity, after Shue Yan University, Hang Seng University and Metropolitan University.

The Tseung Kwan O-based institution has some 3,000 full-time and 500 part-time students, offering bachelor’s degrees in business and hospitality management, health sciences and design.

Students may also pursue degree and high diploma-level qualifications in fields such as techno-humanities, which focuses on artificial intelligence and communication technology. It also plans to launch a nursing and allied health master’s course.
