Thailand urges halt in deployment of migrant workers to Israel war zone after latest deaths
Foreign minister calls for all Thai nationals to be evacuated from the border area, after four workers were killed by rocket fires from Lebanon
The deaths of four more Thai workers in rocket fire near Israel’s border with Lebanon has prompted a rare rebuke by Thai authorities of Tel Aviv and renewed calls to suspend deployments of migrant workers to an area where open-ended conflict continues to bring extreme dangers.
Four workers were killed – and a fifth was wounded – as rocket fire, believed to have come from Lebanon, struck the town of Metula last Friday, Thai authorities have said.
The deaths take the grim toll of Thais killed since October last year to 50.
Forty-six Thais were among the 1,200 people killed when Hamas militants attacked Israeli towns.
A further 30 Thai nationals were taken as hostages back into Gaza, with six believed to still be in captivity. Yet their safety remains unknown in an area obliterated by Israel since the October 7 attack.
The war has killed an estimated 43,000 Palestinians so far and nearly 3,000 in Lebanon.
