The body of a five-year-old girl was recovered in Indonesia’s Bangka-Belitung Islands on Sunday, hours after she was reportedly snatched by a saltwater crocodile.
The girl, identified by rescuers as Chaca, was found dead early Sunday morning, Antara News reported. She was last seen bathing in an abandoned tin-ore mining pond on Saturday.
“The victim was snatched by a crocodile,” said I Made Oka Astawa, head of the search and rescue agency based in the province’s capital city of Pangkalpinang.
Her body has since been turned over to her family for burial.
The discovery of Chaca’s body at 5.20am on Sunday concluded an hours-long search that involved local rescuers, the army and the police.


Crocodile attacks are a perennial occurrence in the Southeast Asian archipelago, which is home to a vast array of exotic wildlife.
In 2020, a saltwater crocodile attacked and killed a six-year-old boy swimming near a beach on Buru island, Maluku province. Local marine police later shot the crocodile dead.
A year earlier, a scientist in Sulawesi was mauled to death by a pet crocodile after she fell into the reptile’s enclosure. The crocodile, named Merry, had eaten one of the victim’s hands.
Authorities later determined that the crocodile was owned illegally and transferred it to a conservation area.
That same year, a fisherman lost an arm after he was also attacked by a crocodile on the Seranggas River in Kalimantan.
In 2016, a Russian tourist was killed by a crocodile in the Raja Ampat Islands, a popular diving site in the east of the archipelago.
