In his sole term as US president from 2021-2025, Joe Biden continued the hard-line approach to China marked by his predecessor, Donald Trump, on the tariff and trade restriction fronts. However, he veered towards what he called “de-risking” rather than the full economic decoupling that more hawkish American politicians pushed for, and engaged more readily with US allies. His administration’s relationship with China also reflected a focus on technological security.
