Two masked gunmen stormed the office of French satire newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris and slaughtered 12 people on January 7, 2015, in apparent revenge against the weekly's publication of cartoons ridiculing the Prophet Mohammed. Eight more people died, including three attackers, in the subsequent hunt for the gunmen near Paris. The violence led to a world-wide campaign of condemnation against terror and solidarity with the slain journalists. A record-breaking 3.7 million people marched across France on January 11 in tribute to the victims.
