The Alibaba unit signed a deal with China Media Group (CMG), which owns state broadcaster China Central Television, to be the “exclusive partner” on cloud computing and AI for the 2025 Spring Festival Gala show, according to a statement issued by CMG on Wednesday.

The TV show, which airs on January 28, has been a Lunar New Year’s Eve tradition for millions of Chinese families since it started in 1983. In 2018, the gala attracted as many as 1 billion viewers.

It marks the first time the show, which began accepting sponsorships from big tech companies such as Alibaba and Tencent Holdings a decade ago, will join hands with a cloud service provider to boost its technological capabilities.
