The cloud computing unit of Huawei Technologies has adjusted its leadership team, as the Chinese telecommunications equipment giant competes with rivals such as Alibaba Group Holding and Tencent Holdings for a bigger slice of the market amid an artificial intelligence (AI) boom.
Company veteran Zhao Minglu has taken over as legal representative and board chair at Huawei Cloud Computing Technologies, replacing Zhang Pingan and Wang Tao, respectively, according to data from business registry platform Qichacha.
Zhang remains CEO of Huawei Cloud, according to the company’s website, while Zhao continues to serve as legal representative in six other Huawei subsidiaries, including an investment arm and the chip design unit HiSilicon, records showed.
Wang is still chairman of Huawei’s ICT infrastructure managing board.
Other personnel changes on Thursday included the exits of Liu Kang, Bin Yunsong and Wang Yifan from the board, and the addition of Tao Jingwen and Tang Jing as new directors.

Huawei did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.
The cloud unit – which develops AI solutions and infrastructure, and offers enterprise-facing services – has been a main growth driver for Huawei, as it strives to diversify its revenue source after its smartphone business was hobbled by US sanctions.
Last year, Huawei’s cloud computing revenue rose 21.9 per cent year on year to 55.29 billion yuan (US$7.79 billion), according to the company’s annual report.
Huawei currently ranks as the second-largest cloud services provider on the mainland, trailing Alibaba’s cloud unit, according to research firm Canalys. Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post.
Still, Huawei has to contend with restricted access to advanced chips from abroad. The company was added to Washington’s Entity List in 2019, requiring it to obtain approval to purchase certain US technologies, including chips. In 2020, Washington introduced new curbs barring foreign chip makers using US software or technology from selling to Huawei.
At the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai in July, Zhang downplayed the impact of US sanctions on Huawei, telling an audience that the company was seeking to reduce reliance on semiconductors by shifting some computation from chips to the cloud.
Huawei’s AI solution is built on the firm’s self-developed processors and framework, dispensing with the need for American-origin semiconductors. Huawei’s Ascend AI chips now serve as an alternative to US-restricted graphics processing units from Nvidia.
