Iga Swiatek swatted Emma Raducanu aside in a meeting of former women’s grand slam singles champions in the third round, before Jannik Sinner earned his place in round four with a straight sets victory at the Australian Open on Saturday.

Swiatek won the final 11 games of their match to beat 2021 US Open champion Raducanu 6-1, 6-0.

The No 2-ranked Swiatek, who agreed to accept a one-month suspension in a doping case late last year, has won the French Open four times and the US Open in 2022. She is nearly halfway to a possible Australian title where her best result to date was a semi-final appearance in 2022, losing to eventual runner-up Danielle Collins.

“I hit a few shots and afterwards I thought, ‘This is what I practise for.’ From the beginning I felt like I was playing well,” said Swiatek, who won 59 points and lost 29 in the match. “I felt pretty confident, so at the end I could push for even more.”

Later on Saturday, Sinner earned his place in the second week with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory over American Marcos Giron, despite a dip in form in the third set.

“Every match has its own difficulties,” said Sinner, who produced 35 winners but also had 37 unforced errors in a little over two hours of action.
