Hangzhou Open: Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong, China’s Wu Yibing meet again in Asian Games rematch
The pair played out a memorable match last year in the Zhejiang capital, in what was arguably the biggest victory of Wong’s career so far
Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong Chak-lam and China’s Wu Yibing have history in Hangzhou – and they are set to make some more in the first round of the city’s ATP Tour event on Thursday.
The pair clashed in the capital of Zhejiang province last year in the third round of the Asian Games, a match Wong won in thrilling fashion after saving five match points to come from 6-1 down in the final set tiebreak to win 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.
It was arguably the biggest victory of Wong’s career so far, possibly equalled only by his defeat of Sumit Nagal to reach the main draw of the ATP 1000 Masters event in Miami in March.
On Wednesday, Wong beat China’s Te Rigele in qualifying to set up a rematch with former world No 54 Wu, who has only recently started his comeback following surgery to his left foot.
Now ranked 566th, Wu won a Challenger Tour event in Jinan last month in only his second tournament since last year’s US Open, and has been handed a wild card this week.
