Hong Kong pairs gun for Paralympics golds with China virtually unassailable on medal table
Wang Ziying’s wheelchair tennis gold hopes extinguished by exceptional De Groot, but Chinese player’s dream for medal lives on with bronze bid
Two Hong Kong duos marched into Paralympics boccia finals overnight, raising the prospect of the city doubling its gold medal haul in Paris.
The BC3 mixed pairs team of Tse Tak-wah and Ho Yuen-kei beat Thailand 3-2 to book a final clash with South Koreans Jeong Ho-won and Kang Sun-hee.
In the BC4 category, Annie Cheung – the silver medallist in the women’s individual competition – and partner Leung Yuk-wing will battle the Colombian brother and sister combination of Edilson and Leidy Chica for gold, after beating Canada 6-4 in their semi-final.
Ho, who won the BC3 women’s individual title, said: “I’m so excited, so thrilled, because we can say we’ve made history, reaching the final for the first time in boccia’s BC3 category … Tse also said he’s so excited that his mind has gone blank.”
Leung was reduced to tears when his own individual hopes went up in smoke at the quarter-final stage, but he is eyeing golden atonement alongside Cheung.
“I’m so excited and really happy,” Leung said. “Before the competition, I said I wanted to make it to the doubles final. In the end, we made it, so I’m very happy.”
