US Open: Zheng Qinwen, Coco Gauff, Novak Djokovic in action as final grand slam starts
- Olympic champion Zheng hopes to be China’s first grand slam winner in 10 years, while it is the last chance for a major this year for the Serb
The US Open starts on Monday (US time) at Flushing Meadows, with defending champions Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff in action, along with Olympic gold medallist Zheng Qinwen.
Serbia’s Djokovic is trying to become the first man to successfully defend his US Open crown since Roger Federer won five straight from 2004 to 2008.
It is the last chance for the 37-year-old, who won Olympic singles gold in Paris, to avoid a grand slam shutout this season, after Jannik Sinner won the Australian Open and Carlos Alcaraz bagged both the French Open and Wimbledon titles.
After reaching the final of the Australian Open, where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka, Zheng goes into the tournament having made history in Paris, but still trying to become her country’s first grand slam winner since Li Na in 2014.
Here are three matches to watch out for on the first day of the year’s final grand slam.
Zheng Qinwen vs Amanda Anisimova
Monday, 11pm (HKT): Newly minted Olympic gold medallist Zheng will probably find herself in hostile territory on Louis Armstrong Stadium when she takes on US wild card Amanda Anisimova in the first career meeting between the two.
