Hong Kong's Olympic qualifying campaign may have received the kind of kick-start it needed when the Asian sevens champions scored two tries in a losing cause against Fiji at the Japan Sevens on Saturday.

Crossing the line twice against one of the best teams in the world is nothing to be sneezed at and it will be a massive boost to Hong Kong, especially after last weekend's disappointment in failing to qualify for core team status on the World Series.

"It was a gutsy performance from the guys," said Dai Rees, the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union's head of technical development and performance.

"We were very committed to all aspects of the game and it was a very proud and hard-working effort."

Tom McQueen and skipper Jamie Hood scored as Hong Kong went down fighting 35-14.

McQueen's early effort even saw Hong Kong lead 7-0 at one stage before the powerful Fijian outfit, who won the Hong Kong Sevens title last Sunday, regained control.
