Two-try Aggie Poon puts Hong Kong women in confident mood

Two tries from winger Aggie Poon Pak-yan in a winning cause against powerful Kazakhstan has put Hong Kong within touching distance of the gold medal in the Asian Games women’s rugby sevens competition.

Two tries from winger Aggie Poon Pak-yan in a winning cause against powerful Kazakhstan has put Hong Kong within touching distance of the gold medal in the Asian Games women’s rugby sevens competition.

Poon scored in each half as Hong Kong came back from 5-7 to pull off a morale-boosting 12-7 victory in their final pool game and finish unbeaten and on top. It handed them an easier semi-final on Thursday when they come up against Japan, a side they defeated the last time the two sides met.

Lifted by her team’s performance on the field, buoyant head coach Anna Richards believes Hong Kong have a good chance of beating Japan and going for gold.

“We have a very good chance of beating Japan,” she said. “We have shown we have the capability, and we are playing better than we did in the Asian series.

“Finishing on top of our pool was what we were aiming for over the first two days and I feel we have a good chance now. But no matter what happens tomorrow, [this] will give the girls confidence.”

The Hong Kong women have looked impressive and passionate as they dominated their pool with victories over Laos (52-0), Malaysia (65-0) and Thailand (33-14) on the first day, before returning to the Namdong Asiad Rugby Field stadium to narrowly clinch a tough tie against Kazakhstan.
