Max Denmark said the emergence of the “next generation” of Hong Kong sevens stars, coupled with long-standing teammates reaching the end of their careers, had served as a reminder that he was in a race against time to achieve his major rugby goals.

Star wing Denmark has twice come “agonisingly close” to Olympics qualification, and he revealed that he thinks every day about correcting those near misses to go to the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

More immediately, Denmark and his teammates are about to embark on seven weeks of “solid preparation” for their 2025 Challenger Series campaign.

Hong Kong are desperate to atone for last year’s edition, when a poor opening leg ultimately shredded their chance of going to the Madrid season-ending playoffs, where spots on the global 2024-25 HSBC SVNS Series were up for grabs.

This year’s Challenger Series begins with back-to-back legs in Cape Town from March 1, and concludes in Krakow the following month. The top-four overall finishers will qualify for May’s promotion playoffs in Los Angeles.
