‘Upgraded’ Hong Kong Sevens set for Kai Tak in 2025, but no word on test events for venue
The marquee 48-year-old rugby sevens event is moving from Hong Kong Stadium, where it has been staged since 1982
Rugby chiefs have promised an “upgraded” Hong Kong Sevens, after confirming one of the city’s blockbuster events will move to Kai Tak Sports Park in time for its 2025 edition.
It was an open secret that the 2024 sevens would be the last hosted at Hong Kong Stadium, where it grew into an iconic spectacle after moving to the venue in 1982.
The official announcement came on Monday, roughly six months before the 2025 event gets under way.
Chris Brooke, the chairman of Hong Kong, China Rugby [HKCR], said the governing body was “comfortable” that sufficient test events would be staged before around 150,000 people pour through the stadium gates over three days from March 28 next year.
The Hong Kong Sevens, which began in 1976, roared back to life in 2022 following a three-year hiatus caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“This is an opportunity to build on the success of what we’ve been doing, it’s going to be a bigger event … with more activities around the stadium,” Brooke told the Post.
