The win also saw the return to Shek Kip Mei of the Broony Quaich – a prize especially important to the boys from The Rock as it is named after one of their own.

“The Quaich was a big driver for us,” said HK Scottish coach Craig Hammond. “We knew we would be up against it as we haven’t won here [in Aberdeen against HKCC] in a couple of years.

“So I’m pleased with the response from the guys. Particularly in the second half when we picked it up a gear after going to sleep a bit after half-time last week,” added Hammond, referring to his side’s 24-8 first-round defeat by Societe Generale Valley.

HKCC were first to strike with new number eight Marcus Slade collecting his first try for the club after some heavy lifting by the home pack. Fly-half Jason Kjestrup added the conversion and a first-half penalty, while replacement Mak Stower scored a second-half consolation try.
