Hong Kong’s national under-20s team cleared the first hurdle in their bid to qualify for the 2015 IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy after they hammered Taiwan 44-5 in Colombo on Sunday at the ARFU Asian Qualifiers for the 2015 IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy.

Hong Kong were in command throughout the match, posting a 32-0 lead at half-time and conceding Taiwan's only points late in the fixture.

Captain and fullback Hugo Stiles notched up two penalties and three conversions in the first period, with a further conversion in the second half bringing his points total to 14 in the first of three matches in this Asian Rugby Football Union tournament.

Hong Kong number eight Richard Lewis scored two tries in the opening half with centre Hugo Chui and flanker Alessandro Nardoni also crossing over before the break. Centre Jordan Cooper and wing Eric Kwok Pak-nga added to Hong Kong’s six-try tally in the second period.

In the second match of the day, South Korea narrowly edged hosts Sri Lanka 31-28, bringing the Koreans level with Hong Kong at the top of the table on six points, after both teams collecting bonus points for scoring four or more tries.

Hong Kong play Sri Lanka in round two and face South Korea on Saturday.
