Andy Hall’s side were competitive early and trailed only 14-3 at the half, with a penalty from full back Matt Worley even seeing Hong Kong lead 3-0 at one point.

But the tries came thick and fast from Uruguay after the break and they piled on 59 unanswered points before No 8 Max Denmark touched down for Hong Kong’s only try.

The loss sees Hong Kong finish bottom in pool B, meaning they will play Canada in a play-off for seventh spot on Sunday night, who also went through pool play without a win.
