Coach’s Corner | The Hong Kong way takes shape despite familiar ending to Cup of Nations
Leigh Jones’ attention to detail and targeted training sessions see his side develop their own unique style of rugby, says assistant Andy Hall
You’d be forgiven for sensing an element of Groundhog Day in the result of last weekend’s Cup of Nations – same competition, same finalists and the same result.
However, from my perspective things could not be more different.
It’s been 12 months since I handed back the reins of the national 15s side to Leigh Jones and he’s been cracking his whip from day one impressing a training regime and a style of play that we are developing as “The Hong Kong Way”.
Before a ball had been kicked in this year’s Cup of Nations, fellow national coach Craig Hammond and I were chatting over a coconut water (Craig) and a beer (me) about the remarkable contrast between this and last year’s preparation.
The level of detail that Leigh has added as a result of his experience with Eddie Jones’ Japan has been significant and has certainly pushed us as coaches, as well the players of course.
