Recap by phillip woo

Fast Responder ran on from behind midfield on the grandstand side from the widest draw to take control 150m out for a first local win. Crimson Flash stayed on well for second after a prominent run on the far side from gate three. It was a solid run on debut in Hong Kong. Sparkling Fellow ran on nicely from towards the rear to just miss second prize money. It was an eye-catching first performance in Hong Kong. Cheval Valiant gradually faded after his usual role dictating things from gate seven. He makes his own luck in front and is always a chance over this course and distance. Know At Heart was badly held up for clear running over the final 150m out following a patient ride at the rear of the field. He should have at least picked up a placing. Favourite Super Fortune produced a grinding effort travelling better than midfield following a tardy start. He had an excuse. Dream Winner only plodded following a midfield run one off the stands side.

Racing Incident Report

Race Nine : (384) - WHEELCHAIR FENCING 1000M HANDICAP - Class 3 - 1000Meters

Horse No 1 DREAM WINNER (H308) C Y Ho Over the final 100 Metres was held up for clear running behind CHEVAL VALIANT and as a result could not be ridden out to the finish of the event.

Horse No 2 SUPER FORTUNE (G065) M F Poon Made contact with the right side of its barrier on jumping and lost ground.

Shortly after the start raced tight to the outside of CHEVAL VALIANT when that runner shifted out.

After the event, M F Poon stated that after losing ground at the start his mount was obliged to race in amongst other horses.

He said SUPER FORTUNE is better suited when being able to control or race outside the lead.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 4 AWESOME TREASURE (E435) E C W Wong Jumped awkwardly.

After the event, Apprentice E C W Wong could offer no explanation for his mount's disappointing performance.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Horse No 5 FAST RESPONDER (J295) P N Wong Jumped awkwardly.

Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 7 CRIMSON FLASH (K173) L Ferraris Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 8 CANDLELIGHT DINNER (J468) M L Yeung A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Horse No 10 CHEVAL VALIANT (E336) H Bentley The Stewards conducted an inquiry into the reason for FAST RESPONDER being able to improve to the outside of CHEVAL VALIANT near the 350 Metres when CHEVAL VALIANT shifted in and away from the outside rail.

Evidence was taken from Trainer D J Whyte, H Bentley, rider of CHEVAL VALIANT, and Apprentice P N Wong, rider of FAST RESPONDER.

Jockey Bentley stated that his instructions were to hold the lead and to carry his whip in his right hand as CHEVAL VALIANT has a tendency to lay in in its races.

He stated that when he first asked CHEVAL VALIANT to improve from the 600 Metres it commenced to lay in and for this reason approaching the 450 Metres he took his hand from his left rein to regather his mount and attempt to straighten it.

He said at the same time he shifted his weight in the saddle towards the outside to further prevent CHEVAL VALIANT from shifting in.

When questioned regarding his left arm extending out and away from CHEVAL VALIANT, Jockey Bentley stated that it was a common trait in his riding that his left arm would extend away from his horse when performing similar actions.

Apprentice Wong confirmed that she was given no instruction in relation to the positioning of CHEVAL VALIANT, however, she was aware that having previously ridden the horse before that CHEVAL VALIANT does have a tendency to lay in in its races and potentially a run may become available on the stand rail.

After considering all the evidence, the Stewards were satisfied that CHEVAL VALIANT had shifted in due to its own racing manners and that Jockey Bentley had endeavoured to prevent his mount from shifting in but was unable to do so which resulted in FAST RESPONDER obtaining a clear run to its outside.

Horse No 11 GRAND NOVA (J323) A Atzeni After the event, A Atzeni reported that after commencing well GRAND NOVA was unable to obtain cover in the early stages and as a result did not finish the race off.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Horse No 12 KNOW AT HEART (K108) M Chadwick Jumped only fairly.

Shortly after the start raced in restricted room between SPARKLING FELLOW and SKY CAP which shifted out.

When questioned, M Chadwick stated that after following SPARKLING FELLOW into the race from the 300 Metres he became held up when positioned behind that runner.

He said he initially contemplated shifting to the inside of CRIMSON FLASH to obtain clear running but was prevented from doing so due to AWESOME TREASURE being positioned to his inside.

He said as a result he elected to follow SPARKLING FELLOW into the event but when that runner did not continue to improve he became badly held up behind SPARKLING FELLOW over the final 200 Metres and as a consequence could not ride his mount out to the finish of the event.

Horse No 9 SILK ROAD GLORY (J361) K Teetan Was found to be lame in its left front leg on arrival at the Start.

Acting on veterinary advice that SILK ROAD GLORY was not suitable to race, the horse was withdrawn by order of the Stewards.

Before being allowed to race again, SILK ROAD GLORY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination which must include additional diagnostic assessments.
