Recap by phillip woo

After settling near the speed from gate seven, New Power reeled in long-time leader Lean Master 50m out for an overdue win. He appreciated the return to the Valley after earning minor cheques in seven of eight prior starts at Sha Tin. Lean Master grudgingly gave way after dictating the pace from gate one with the claim well utilised. He has been sprinting consistently well. Chateauneuf motored late for third after settling fourth last from a wide draw. It was a good run trying the Valley for the first time. Colonel just plodded after a speed-tracking run on the fence. He rarely produces a bad run. After a rails run from midfield, Mr Valiant made some ground to finish next best without threatening the top four. He hasn't disgraced but has failed to take his game to a new level. Lucky Quality made headway late down the outside after making his run one off from behind midfield. He tends to mix his form. Super Glory stayed on OK for seventh after a prominent run wide without cover from a tricky gate. Newcomer Foxhunter King made some progress late near the inside after struggling to stay in touch.

Racing Incident Report

Race Two : (648) - WYNDHAM HANDICAP - Class 4 - 1200Meters

Horse No 1 CHATEAUNEUF (J219) Z Purton From a wide barrier was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.

Horse No 2 ACE ONE (G196) H Bowman At declaration time, A Atzeni was declared as the rider of both ACE ONE and SUPER GLORY.

It was established that A Atzeni had a firm commitment to ride SUPER GLORY.

As such, the Stewards permitted H Bowman to be substituted as the rider of ACE ONE.

For this declaration error, Trainer D J Whyte was fined $2,000.

When questioned regarding his riding, H Bowman stated that from the outside barrier he was instructed to ride his mount in a conservative manner in the early stages as connections had assessed the early pace of the event would potentially be run inside of standard time.

He said after settling back in the field he rode his mount along from the 600 Metres to improve where ACE ONE responded only fairly to his riding.

He said entering the Home Straight he considered shifting to the outside of LUCKY QUALITY, but as ACE ONE was not travelling well enough to do so, he then elected to endeavour to improve into a run between LUCKY QUALITY and SUPER GLORY.

He added that when SUPER GLORY shifted out slightly near the 250 Metres, he then directed his mount to the inside of SUPER GLORY to obtain clear running, however, shortly after SUPER GLORY shifted back in and when ACE ONE was then positioned inside the heels of SUPER GLORY, he was held up for clear running between the 200 Metres and the 150 Metres.

He further stated that over the concluding stages ACE ONE finished the race off only fairly.

Trainer D J Whyte confirmed the instructions issued and stated that whilst ACE ONE had been ridden forward from wide draws in the past, such instructions were issued to offset the expected fast early pace of the event.

The Stewards found the tactics adopted by Jockey Bowman, having regard to his explanations, were reasonable in the circumstances.

Horse No 3 EVER SMART (J179) H Bentley Jumped awkwardly and then was crowded shortly after the start by LUCKY QUALITY which shifted out.

Approaching the 1000 Metres shifted out when being steadied away from LUCKY QUALITY.

After the race, H Bentley reported that after being hampered at the start his mount settled further back than what had been intended.

He added EVER SMART travelled only fairly during the running of the event and finished the race off in a one-paced manner.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Horse No 4 FOXHUNTER KING (J044) H T Mo Jumped awkwardly and lost ground.

Horse No 5 WIN SPEED (J205) B Thompson Jumped only fairly.

Horse No 6 MR VALIANT (G288) B Avdulla Bumped shortly after the start.

Horse No 7 FLYING PHANTOM (J086) A Badel Jumped awkwardly and made contact with the left side of its barrier.

Near the 600 Metres was eased away from CHATEAUNEUF (Z Purton) which shifted in.

Z Purton was advised to ensure that he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground.

Horse No 8 LEAN MASTER (H134) E C W Wong Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 12 NEW POWER (H325) K Teetan Sent for sampling post-race.
