Recap by phillip woo

Short-priced favourite California Spangle dug deep to get up near 100m after a speed-chasing run for a fourth Group success from seven starts this term. He's very classy. Plunged late Money Catcher stayed on nicely for second after slotting eventually in the one-one from a wide draw. It was a solid effort over a distance short of his best. Sensationally-backed Beauty Joy plugged on nicely to finish a close third after a box seat run. He's honest but has trouble winning at this level. Healthy Happy grudgingly gave way after clearing to the lead from gate six. He's not easy to get right. Running Glory ran on steadily to finish next best without menacing the top four from midfield. It wasn't a bad effort with a step back in distance and significant rise in class. Tourbillon Diamond ran on without threatening from the rear of the field. He's disappointed in his past two starts. Waikuku just plodded after a handy run. He's beyond his better days.

Racing Incident Report

Race Nine: (566) - THE CHAIRMAN'S TROPHY - Class G2 - 1600Meters

As H Bowman was unable to fulfil the engagement on BEAUTY JOY due to being overweight, M Chadwick was substituted as the rider of that horse.

H Bowman was fined the sum of $10,000.

RUNNING GLORY jumped only fairly.

TOURBILLON DIAMOND jumped awkwardly and then was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.

Passing the 1200 Metres, BEAUTY JOY got its head up when being steadied.

When questioned, M Chadwick (BEAUTY JOY) stated that approaching the 250 Metres he endeavoured to improve into a narrow run between HEALTHY HAPPY and CALIFORNIA SPANGLE when that runner shifted out.

He added that BEAUTY JOY did not quicken sufficiently to take advantage of that run and as a result when CALIFORNIA SPANGLE shifted back in approaching the 150 Metres, he became briefly held up for clear running.

He said again after the 150 Metres when CALIFORNIA SPANGLE shifted out, he attempted to obtain a run between CALIFORNIA SPANGLE and HEALTHY HAPPY, however, once again BEAUTY JOY did not quicken sufficiently to take advantage of that run and then over the concluding stages became held up on CALIFORNIA SPANGLE and as a result at the winning post he was obliged to check to avoid the heels of CALIFORNIA SPANGLE.

After the race, A Badel (TOURBILLON DIAMOND) reported that, in his opinion, the horse would be better suited by stepping up in distance at its next race start, however, was still somewhat disappointing in today's event.

A veterinary inspection of TOURBILLON DIAMOND immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

CALIFORNIA SPANGLE and MONEY CATCHER were sent for sampling.
