Racing Incident Report
Race Two: (483) - YIU TUNG HANDICAP - Class 5 - 1200Meters
On arrival at the Start, M F Poon expressed concern regarding the action of XIANG LAN QI.
An examination of XIANG LAN QI conducted by the Veterinary Officer found that horse to be lame in the left front leg and accordingly not suitable to race.
Acting on this advice, XIANG LAN QI was withdrawn by order of the Stewards.
Before being allowed to race again, XIANG LAN QI will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
ONE STEP AHEAD began only fairly.
CIGAR BUDDIES shifted out at the start and bumped HANDSOME REBEL.
From wide barriers, EVER JOY, INESTIMABLE and RED BRICK GLORY were steadied in the early stages to obtain cover.
Near the 1050 Metres, ONE STEP AHEAD momentarily raced tight inside ISLAND SUNSHINE which shifted in before being directed out to relieve the crowding to ONE STEP AHEAD.
When being directed out, ISLAND SUNSHINE became unbalanced.
HANDSOME REBEL got its head on the side and lay out making the turn near the 1000 Metres and then lay out again rounding the Home Turn.
After the 1000 Metres, EVER JOY commenced to race keenly and got its head up for some distance when awkwardly placed outside the heels of CARRY THE DIAMOND.
EVER JOY continued to prove very difficult to settle throughout the middle stages and was awkwardly placed behind REGENCY POET after the 800 Metres.
EVER JOY was then checked away from the heels of REGENCY POET approaching the 500 Metres.
EVER JOY was then held up for clear running rounding the Home Turn and approaching the 200 Metres was shifted to the inside of CARRY THE DIAMOND after being disappointed for running between that horse which shifted out and REGENCY POET.
After being shifted to the inside of CARRY THE DIAMOND, EVER JOY lay in near the 150 Metres.
Throughout the race, REGENCY POET travelled wide and without cover.
After the 800 Metres, RED BRICK GLORY was also left racing wide and without cover.
After the race, J Moreira was not able to offer an explanation for the performance of ISLAND SUNSHINE which he said did not close the race off after being placed under pressure.
A veterinary inspection of ISLAND SUNSHINE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of REGENCY POET immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
ONE STEP AHEAD, TAKE WHAT YOU NEED and CIGAR BUDDIES were sent for sampling.

Take What You Need just wore down long-time leader Cigar Buddies for a maiden win after a dream run in the box-seat. He put the writing on the wall with a better run following a downgrade last start at Sha Tin. Cigar Buddies grudgingly gave way after dictating the run. He's been racing well over this Valley trip this term. Favourite One Step Ahead came from near last after a tardy break to get the head down for third. He's as honest as the day is long. Punted late, Handsome Rebel kept plugging away to just miss a placing stalking the speed from a tricky gate. He can get away with a race shortly in this grade. Sunny Smile ran on steadily without menacing after a rails run worse than midfield. He can produce an odd decent run now and then and did have a good draw. Carry The Diamond came up one-paced after a prominent run one-off the fence. He prefers 1,000m. Inestimable ran on all right near the inside from the rear of the field. It was a better run following a downgrade and he might want a longer trip. Red Brick Glory will sleep well after getting caught four deep without cover in midfield. Xiang Lan Qi was withdrawn by order of the stewards under veterinary advice.
