Recap by phillip woo

Magnificent kept on gamely after surging to the lead 250m out following a lovely ride one-out, one-back by Dylan Mo Hin-tung. Well-backed late Farshad found one too good after settling one-off in midfield from a tricky gate. He continues to produce honest efforts after a win four runs back. Xiang Bai Xi closed well from behind midfield to finish a non-threatening third. He's not a prolific winner but rarely produces a bad run at the Valley. Brave King was doing his best work late to fill the frame after making his run third from the rear. Nordic Warrior kept grinding away following a one-off run in midfield. Prefer him over the Valley 1,200m in Class Four. Smart Patch ran on without menacing after settling last from a wide gate. Wind Glider came up flat after a prominent run on the fence. It was a disappointing effort. Favourite Green Reign's move from near last at the 450m was short-lived trying visors for the first time. He had an excuse.

Racing Incident Report

Race Seven: (676) - NAM CHUNG RIVER HANDICAP - Class 3 - 1650Meters

RACING LUCK was withdrawn on 19.5.20 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (swollen and lame right hind) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter SMART COUSIN (M L Yeung).

Before being allowed to race again, RACING LUCK will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

NORDIC WARRIOR shifted out at the start and bumped XIANG BAI QI.

BRAVE KING shifted out at the start and bumped SMART COUSIN.

After this, SMART COUSIN was shifted across behind runners.

From a wide barrier, SMART PATCH was steadied in the early stages to obtain cover.

Near the 1150 Metres, FARSHAD was steadied away from the heels of MAGNIFICENT.

Passing the 1000 Metres, MAGNIFICENT raced close to the heels of CHAIRMAN LO.

In the early part of the Straight, FARSHAD got its head on the side and lay in behind MAGNIFICENT.

Approaching the 200 Metres, BRAVE KING was shifted in away from the heels of CHAIRMAN LO to obtain clear running.

After the race, N Callan was not able to offer any explanation for the disappointing performance of WIND GLIDER.

He said the horse enjoyed a good run behind the speed, however, after obtaining clear running at the entrance to the Straight did not finish off the race, was disappointing and, in his opinion, raced "flat?? A veterinary inspection of WIND GLIDER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Also after the race, K Teetan stated that after being ridden along in the early stages to obtain a position outside the lead from a wide barrier, CHAIRMAN LO would not settle and travelled too keenly.

He said because of this CHAIRMAN LO was then not able to finish off the race in the Straight.

A veterinary inspection of CHAIRMAN LO immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of GREEN REIGN, J Moreira stated that, from the outside barrier, he was asked to shift the horse across behind runners in the early stages as GREEN REIGN had previously performed well when ridden by him in this manner.

He said after shifting GREEN REIGN across behind runners, the horse travelled well in the early and middle stages.

He said he was following SMART COUSIN passing the 600 Metres when that horse came under pressure and as SMART COUSIN was not taking him into the race, he shifted GREEN REIGN out from behind that horse in an endeavour to commence improving his position.

He said GREEN REIGN initially quickened satisfactorily but after making the Home Turn wide came under pressure from the 300 Metres and then did not finish off the race over the concluding stages.

A veterinary inspection of GREEN REIGN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

The performance of GREEN REIGN, favourite for tonight's race, was considered unacceptable.

Before being allowed to race again, GREEN REIGN will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

A veterinary inspection of CALIFORNIA GUNGHO immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse's trachea.

GREEN REIGN, MAGNIFICENT and FARSHAD were sent for sampling.
