Recap by phillip woo

Early favourite Turin Redstar came on well following a one-off run in third to take control 60m out for an overdue win after catching the eye three times in defeat. Ultimate Glory closed well following a midfield run on the fence to grab second at a decent price. Post-time favourite Calculation went a bit too hard after leading from a wide gate and had to settle for third in the end. In a bunched finish for fourth, Dynamic Eagle got the bob down over Green Card following a rail run travelling behind midfield. He's shown some ability in his three starts and appears to want a mile trip. Green Card made a decent bid from the second half of the field. He won off a similar mark earlier in the campaign so a positive run was no surprise. Lucky Guy closed well after a deep run travelling third from the rear. He appears from his past couple to be finding his mark again. God Of Dragon ran on without menacing from behind midfield.

Racing Incident Report

Race Ten: (475) - PARUS HANDICAP - Class 3 - 1400Meters

HAPPY GUY shifted out at the start and bumped DYNAMIC EAGLE.

LUCKY GUY lifted its front feet off the ground at the start and began only fairly.

From the outside barrier, JOYFUL MOMENTS got its head up on a number of occasions when being steadied so as to shift across behind runners to obtain cover in the early stages.

Approaching the 900 Metres, GREEN CARD was inconvenienced when momentarily crowded for room inside GOD OF DRAGON which shifted in.

Passing the 300 Metres, WINSTON'S LAD was shifted to the outside of MERRYGOWIN to obtain clear running.

Near the 50 Metres, the whip of K Teetan (LUCKY GUY) was knocked from his grasp by the whip of U Rispoli (GOD OF DRAGON).

Throughout the race, MERRYGOWIN travelled wide and without cover.

When questioned regarding his riding of JOYFUL MOMENTS, A Sanna stated that from the outside barrier he was asked to shift the horse across behind runners, ride the horse for luck in the Straight and attempt to obtain inside runs.

He said in accordance with his instructions he shifted JOYFUL MOMENTS across behind runners and near the 1000 Metres he was following BEAUTY TRUST.

He said as he was aware that that horse was racing with its head on the side and wanting to lay out, he was reluctant to improve around BEAUTY TRUST as he did not want to be taken unnecessarily wide should that horse fail to negotiate the first turn.

He said when BEAUTY TRUST continued to lay out, he was able to improve his position to be racing inside that horse after the 800 Metres.

He said he niggled JOYFUL MOMENTS along to improve its position and slapped the horse down the shoulder with the whip, however, JOYFUL MOMENTS did not pick up as he had hoped and it took the horse some time to join the main body of the field which he was able to do at the entrance to the Straight.

He added he then shifted JOYFUL MOMENTS out in an endeavour to obtain clear running, however, he was unable to do so until passing the 150 Metres after which the horse finished off the race fairly.

A Sanna was advised that his explanation would be reported, however, the Stewards were of the view that he should have made more of an endeavour to join the main body of the field in the middle stages.

He was further advised to ensure that he rides his mounts in such a manner so that they do not get too far out of their ground.

When questioned, D Whyte stated that despite him riding HOME RUN hard in the early stages, that horse would not stretch out and did not feel comfortable in its action.

He said he continued to push the horse for some distance in the early stages and initially gave consideration to easing it out of the race, however, after the 1000 Metres he gathered up HOME RUN to see if the horse would respond better rather than being aggressively ridden.

He said when he did this HOME RUN commenced to travel a little more comfortably, however, was still reluctant to stretch out fully.

He added that as he did not detect anything amiss with HOME RUN, he continued to ride the horse along throughout the race rather than easing it down.

He said he suggested to connections that they consider amending the horse's gear in its future starts to see if this would assist in it travelling better in its races.

A veterinary inspection of HOME RUN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

The performance of HOME RUN was considered unacceptable.

Before being allowed to race again, HOME RUN will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

A veterinary inspection of MERRYGOWIN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

CALCULATION, TURIN REDSTAR and ULTIMATE GLORY were sent for sampling.

28 February 2018 Sha Tin Racemeeting - Race 7 (464) The Stewards today questioned Jockey M Chadwick regarding his riding of CALIFORNIA FORTUNE.

He said as he was instructed to lead the race, he rode CALIFORNIA FORTUNE positively in the early stages.

He said he had to ride the horse for a considerable distance to clear BIG TIME BABY on his inside and he was not able to cross that horse until near the 800 Metres.

He said he then commenced to shift towards the rail, however, approaching the 700 Metres he received a call from the rider of BLOCKER DEE which had improved its position to be racing inside CALIFORNIA FORTUNE.

He said he was then required to prevent CALIFORNIA FORTUNE from shifting in further and interfering with BLOCKER DEE.

He said given that he had to ride the horse along for some distance in the early stages, he did not want to again commence to ride his mount along to clear BLOCKER DEE and for this reason he remained racing outside that horse.

He added in the early part of the Straight he did not immediately commence to ride CALIFORNIA FORTUNE along as in a number of its previous races the horse had not finished off the race when unable to obtain an outright lead.

He said as BLOCKER DEE was positioned to the inside of CALIFORNIA FORTUNE and as his mount was maintaining its position with BLOCKER DEE, he held CALIFORNIA FORTUNE up in the early part of the Straight to present it with the best opportunity to quicken when required.

He said at this time he was also mindful that he had had to ride the horse along throughout the early stages and he believed that commencing to ride his horse too early would result in it not being able to find the line strongly.

He said he placed CALIFORNIA FORTUNE under pressure passing the 300 Metres when still marginally ahead of BLOCKER DEE, however, CALIFORNIA FORTUNE did not finish off the race strongly and lost ground on BLOCKER DEE over the concluding stages.

After considering Jockey Chadwick's evidence, he was advised that his explanation had been accepted.

The Stewards today interviewed Trainer R Gibson in respect of his interaction with the duty Stipendiary Steward during track work on the morning of Thursday, 1 March 2018.

At this time a decision had been made to temporarily close the training tracks due to a heavy fog which had set in and which had negatively impacted on the visibility of riders using the training facilities.

Mr Gibson was advised that the decision of the duty Stipendiary Steward to temporarily close the training facilities was wholly appropriate in the circumstances as the heavy fog presented a safety issue.

Mr Gibson was reminded of the requirement to at all times conduct himself in a respectful manner.

Mr Gibson subsequently informed the Stewards that he had apologised to the relevant duty Stipendiary Steward regarding this matter.
