Recap by phillip woo

Gonna Run rallied strongly near the inside after a patient ride second from the rear to get up 50m out with late-market action despite top weight. He had run well in each of his three outings this term so a victory was no surprise. Super Form peeled into the open with one wider out rounding the final bend after sitting third from the rear to make it close despite a return to Class Three. He loves this course and is effective up to 2,200m. Red Marvel stayed on well following a box-seat run to fill a placing. He's not a prolific winner but is as honest as the day is long on either surface. Golden Sleep kept on better after chasing the speed in second. He was having his fifth run for the term and did win off an identical mark in April. Outlawed grudgingly gave way after leading easily on his own from gate 10. He seems to act better with horses around him. Goodheart Success closed off well near the outside after switching off from a wide gate.

Racing Incident Report

Race Eight: (126) - SUTHERLAND HANDICAP - Class 3 - 1650Meters

MIGHTY BOY was bumped on jumping by QUICK RETURN which shifted in.

WHO DAT SINGA and SUPER FORM bumped at the start as did PHOTON WILLIE and KIRAM.

From the outside barrier, GOODHEART SUCCESS was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.

Despite being ridden along in the early stages, MIGHTY BOY failed to muster speed.

Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, GONNA RUN and SUPER FORM bumped.

Approaching and passing the 1100 Metres, QUICK RETURN got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of WHO DAT SINGA.

Passing the 1100 Metres, RED MARVEL was steadied away from the heels of GOLDEN SLEEP which was taken in by BEAUTY LOVE.

MIGHTY BOY, which was following RED MARVEL, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of that horse in consequence.

After the 1100 Metres, KIRAM was left racing wide and without cover.

BEAUTY LOVE lost its right hind plate after the 1100 Metres.

For some distance after the 700 Metres, WHO DAT SINGA was awkwardly placed close to the heels of BEAUTY LOVE which was commencing to give ground.

QUICK RETURN, which was following WHO DAT SINGA, was checked away from the heels of that horse in consequence.

BEAUTY LOVE then continued to give ground, resulting in WHO DAT SINGA being checked away from the heels of BEAUTY LOVE approaching the 500 Metres and shifting out away from behind that horse which resulted in WHO DAT SINGA and PHOTON WILLIE racing tight.

When WHO DAT SINGA was checked away from the heels of BEAUTY LOVE near the 500 Metres, QUICK RETURN, which was following, was again checked away from the heels of WHO DAT SINGA in consequence.

After this, BEAUTY LOVE continued to give ground abruptly which resulted in QUICK RETURN being severely checked away from the heels of that horse approaching the 400 Metres.

A veterinary inspection of BEAUTY LOVE, which finished tailed out, immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Having regard to BEAUTY LOVE's previous record of having performed unacceptably in races, that horse will be required to perform competitively in a series of consecutive barrier trials and be subjected to an official veterinary examination prior to being permitted to race again.

Close to the finishing line, K Teetan (SUPER FORM) dropped his right rein.

When questioned, Apprentice M F Poon stated that he was instructed to shift OUTLAWED to the centre of the track in the Home Straight as the majority of winning horses had made their runs from the middle towards the outside of the track.

He said for this reason after the 500 Metres he commenced to work his way out as he felt that it was better for him to gradually shift towards the centre of the track rather than getting to the Home Straight and having to shift OUTLAWED abruptly to the centre of the track.

When questioned, W M Lai (GOLDEN SLEEP) stated that whilst it was available to him to improve to the inside of OUTLAWED after the 500 Metres, given the pattern of races previously conducted tonight, he formed the view that it was more advantageous for GOLDEN SLEEP to shift to the outside of OUTLAWED and make its finishing run towards the centre of the track rather than improving to the inside of that horse and racing towards the inner part of the course.

A veterinary inspection of KIRAM immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

GONNA RUN and SUPER FORM were sent for sampling.

14 October 2017 Sha Tin Racemeeting - Race 4 (112) The Stewards tonight interviewed Trainer D E Ferraris and his allocated assistant trainer Mr S K Sit regarding a matter which was referred to the Stewards by Dr P Curl, the Club's Executive Manager, Veterinary Regulation.

Dr Curl informed the Stewards that on the morning of Sunday, 15 October 2017 he had received information from Mr Ferraris that ELITE SPIRIT had bled after the race conducted the previous day, however, this information had not been included in the official racing incidents report.

Mr Ferraris tonight informed the Stewards that as he was not present when ELITE SPIRIT returned following the race, he could not give any evidence as to whether there was blood at either of the horse's nostril, however, Mr Sit had informed him straight after the race that the horse had bled.

Mr Ferraris said that acting on this advice he immediately informed the owner of ELITE SPIRIT that the horse had bled for a second time.

Mr Sit informed the Stewards that when being unsaddled after the race, he observed blood in the right nostril of ELITE SPIRIT, he therefore directed his stables assistant to take the horse to be examined at or near the sampling stalls as is normal practice.

He said at the time he believed that this would be brought to the attention of a Veterinary Officer, however, he acknowledged that he did not specifically instruct the stables assistant to show the horse to a Veterinary Officer.

It was further established that the stables assistant, on arrival at the sampling stalls, was informed by the members of the Security Department that ELITE SPIRIT had not been included in the clinical examination and accordingly the horse was not examined by a Veterinary Officer.

The Stewards accepted that neither Mr Ferraris nor Mr Sit attempted to conceal the fact that ELITE SPIRIT had bled and that the incident occurred due to Mr Sit not fully instructing his stables staff as to the appropriate measures to be taken.

Mr Sit was advised to ensure that he reports any horse which has bled from one or both nostrils to the Stewards, the Veterinary Officer or the Veterinary Surgeon at the earliest opportunity.

Mr Ferraris accepted that ELITE SPIRIT was found to have bled after the race and accordingly the horse was deemed to have bled for the second occasion during its career.

Adjourned Inquiries - 10 September 2017 Sha Tin Racemeeting - Race 9 (27) The Stewards tonight concluded two inquiries which were adjourned from the Sha Tin racemeeting on 10 September 2017.

These inquiries were adjourned due to H W Lai, the rider of G-ONE LOVER, being unavailable as a consequence of injuries sustained when dislodged form that horse near the 550 Metres.

In respect of this incident, the Stewards found that for some distance passing the 600 Metres G-ONE LOVER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of APOLLO'S CHOICE when travelling strongly.

As H W Lai commenced to shift G-ONE LOVER to the outside of APOLLO'S CHOICE, that horse was simultaneously shifted to the outside of the heels of BORNTOACHIEVE.

G-ONE LOVER then clipped the heels of APOLLO'S CHOICE and blundered badly, resulting in H W Lai being dislodged.

As it was established that G-ONE LOVER had not improved to be racing outside of the heels of APOLLO'S CHOICE as that horse shifted to the outside of BORNTOACHIEVE, the Stewards were satisfied that there was no carelessness attached to this incident and accordingly no further action was deemed necessary.

However, H W Lai was told to ensure that, wherever possible, he avoids racing too close to the heels of runners in front.

At a further inquiry, H W Lai (G-ONE LOVER) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that passing the 900 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of OUR FOLKS, causing that horse to be unnecessarily crowded for room and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled.

In the unique circumstances of this case, the Stewards, having regard to the fact that Jockey Lai has not ridden since this racemeeting and is not likely to resume race riding in the immediate future, considered it appropriate for him to be severely reprimanded rather than any period of suspension or monetary penalty being imposed.
