Recap by phillip woo

Plunged in betting, Go Beauty Go got the split to poke his head in front 100m out following a well-executed one-out, one-back run from a wide gate and just held off Smiling Charm by the bob of heads for a fourth win over the 1,600m this term. He needs a strong jockey and is likely to find it tough at the top of the grade off a big weight. Smiling Charm came with a bold move one from the right after travelling third from the rear to make it close. He's caught the eye in back-to-back mile runs and will be winning shortly. Club Life stayed on well after being caught without cover the entire trip near the speed to add to a Class Four win. The feather weight helped but he's racing in great spirits. Fantastic Kaka gave way 100m out after rolling forward to share the lead one off at the 950m from a wide gate. He's capable but not easy to get right.

Racing Incident Report

Race Ten: (724)-HKU SPACE HANDICAP - Class 3 - 1600Metres

PLAY IT was slow to being and subsequently finished tailed out.

A veterinary inspection of PLAY IT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

The performance of PLAY IT was considered unacceptable.

Before being allowed to race again, PLAY IT will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

BULLISH GLORY began awkwardly.

GRANITE BELT and UNICRON JEWELLERY bumped at the start.

FIRST FONTEIN was slow to begin.

Passing the 1500 Metres, BULLISH GLORY was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SMILING CHARM.

Approaching the 1100 Metres, RULE THEE was crowded for room inside BULLISH GLORY which was taken in by SMILING CHARM (U Rispoli).

U Rispoli was severely reprimanded and advised to ensure that he is properly clear when shifting ground in similar circumstances.

GO BEAUTY GO was held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight and passing the 350 Metres made contact with UNICRON JEWELLERY as both horses attempted to improve into an available run between FANTASTIC KAKA and CHEERFUL BOY.

Near the 150 Metres, CHEERFUL BOY and GO BEAUTY GO momentarily raced in restricted room inside FANTASTIC KAKA.

Close to the finishing line, BULLISH GLORY was checked away from the heels of FANTASTIC KAKA.

When questioned regarding his riding of CLUB LIFE, Apprentice M F Poon stated that he had been instructed to attempt to lead on the rail from barrier

5.

He said he was told that after obtaining the lead, if another horse was to be ridden along, it was acceptable for him to allow that horse to cross CLUB LIFE rather than becoming engaged in a speed battle.

He said in accordance with his instructions he rode CLUB LIFE positively in the early stages and slapped the horse down the shoulder with the whip on a number of occasions to have it improve its position to cross UNICRON JEWELLERY to its inside.

He said, despite being hard ridden, CHEERFUL BOY showed more speed than CLUB LIFE in the early stages and passing the 1500 Metres CLUB LIFE raced tight between CHEERFUL BOY and UNICORN JEWELLERY which shifted out.

He said CHEERFUL BOY was showing more speed than CLUB LIFE at this time and he was unable to prevent that horse from crossing CLUB LIFE.

He said when was crowded for room, this provided GO BEAUTY GO with the opportunity to improve its advantage over CLUB LIFE and he was unable to prevent that horse from crossing CLUB LIFE passing the 1400 Metres as it was showing far more speed than CLUB LIFE.

He added after being crossed by GO BEAUTY GO, he noted that that horse was being steadied by its rider and he therefore rode CLUB LIFE vigorously for some distance approaching and passing the 1200 Metres so as to cross GO BEAUTY GO and race outside CHEERFUL BOY and in the process prevent FANTASTIC KAKA from being able to cross CLUB LIFE.

He said, despite being ridden along, CLUB LIFE did not respond and this resulted in the horse travelling wide and without cover for the remainder of the race.

Apprentice Poon was advised that, after viewing the videos of the race, his explanation had been accepted.

When questioned regarding the performance of UNICRON JEWELLERY, J Moreira stated that prior to the race the horse sweated up badly and was agitated both in the Parade Ring and behind the barriers.

He said in the early stages he rode his mount along to take up a forward position and he was able to take a trailing position behind the leader CHEERFUL BOY after the 1400 Metres.

He said UNICRON JEWELLERY travelled comfortably in the early and middle stages, however, when the tempo of the race increased near the 550 Metres, UNICRON JEWELLERY was left flat-footed and had to be ridden along in an attempt to maintain its position behind CHEERFUL BOY.

He added after the 400 Metres he shifted UNICRON JEWELLERY out from behind CHEERFUL BOY to improve into running between that horse and FANTASTIC KAKA.

He said however that UNICRON JEWELLERY did not respond to his riding and this resulted in GO BEAUTY GO being able to improve into this run.

He said, despite being disappointed for this run, UNICRON JEWELLERY immediately came under heavy pressure and then did not close off the race and was particularly disappointing over the latter stages of the race.

A veterinary inspection of UNICRON JEWELLERY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

The performance of UNICRON JEWELLERY, a favourite for today's race, was considered unacceptable.

Before being allowed to race again, UNICRON JEWELLERY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

UNICRON JEWELLERY, GO BEAUTY GO and SMILING CHARM were sent for sampling.

7 June 2017 Happy Valley Racemeeting - Race 6 (712) a.

Race 6 (712)The Stewards today questioned Mr C S Shum, the trainer of MOST BEAUTIFUL, regarding the instructions he provided to C Murray prior to this race.

Mr Shum stated that MOST BEAUTIFUL regularly goes forward in its races, however, it had to be ridden along to do so in a number of starts and because of this was not able to finish off its races as well as it had been hoped.

He said having drawn barrier 10 in this race and because there were a number of horses which were better drawn than MOST BEAUTIFUL and which had previously shown early speed in their races, he felt that were MOST BEAUTIFUL to be ridden along from the wide barrier, there was a likelihood that the horse would be left racing wide and without cover, therefore he asked Jockey Murray to steady MOST BEAUTIFUL in the early stages and obtain cover.

He added whilst it is his preference for MOST BEAUTIFUL to be ridden in a forward position, he believed that the circumstances of this race would have made it difficult for MOST BEAUTIFUL to finish off the race were it to be ridden along in the early stages to obtain a forward position.

Race 8 (714)The Stewards today interviewed U Rispoli regarding his riding of DRAGON GENERAL passing the 600 Metres.

U Rispoli stated that at this time he was following HAPPY METEOR and although he did not believe that the horse would take him into the race, he was reluctant to shift to the outside of that horse to improve to be racing behind VERBINSKY in a three wide position as DRAGON GENERAL had previously made the turns awkwardly in some of its races.

He said although he was aware that CONVINCIBLE was improving its position around DRAGON GENERAL, he felt that were he to shift out at this stage of the race, DRAGON GENERAL may make the turn after the 600 Metres awkwardly which would be to the detriment of the horse's finishing chances.

He said he therefore elected to remain racing behind HAPPY METEOR and when that horse shifted out approaching the 500 Metres, he was able to immediately improve his position inside HAPPY METEOR.
