Recap by phillip woo

Short-priced favourite Winner's Way pressed to the front 1,250m out and kept up a strong gallop to notch a fourth win from nine starts this term. He continues to frank the form of the four-year-olds this season and a group win over 1,400m or a mile isn't far away. Horse Of Fortune came from the tail of the field to run down California Whip 30m out for second. He's lost his way in recent runs but is a quality act on his day. California Whip eased back after showing gate speed to make his run second from the rear, rushed forward to get to second 200m out and peaked on his run inside the 100m. He might be better suited in an 80-100 range race. Punted late, Pablosky was restrained despite jumping well to travel third from the back but did make up ground late to fill a Quartet spot. He appears from his past few to be bottoming out and can strike any time sprinting over the 1,200m on either surface. Lucky Year had no excuse following a oneout, one-back run. He's more effective over the 1,200m. Midnight Rattler offered next to nothing after pressing forward to stalk the leader. This was too rich a test following a win.

Racing Incident Report

Race Three: (645)-THE MACWHINNIE CUP (HANDICAP) - Class 1 - 1400Metres

Despite being ridden along in the early stages, HORSE OF FORTUNE failed to muster speed and shortly after the start was shifted across behind runners.

When questioned, K Teetan stated that he had been asked to ride PABLOSKY more quietly given that the horse was racing over 1400 Metres.

He said it was felt that the horse??s best opportunity to close off the race would be for it to be ridden off the speed given that there were a number of horses engaged in the race which had previously taken up a forward position in their races.

He said in accordance with his instructions, he steadied PABLOSKY in the early stages and the horse initially got its head up, however, shortly after the start commenced to travel kindly and travelled well during the early and middle stages.

He said at the entrance to the Straight PABLOSKY was steadied when unable to improve between MIDNIGHT RATTLER and LUCKY YEAR.

He added he then had to wait for a short distance before being able to shift PABLOSKY to the outside of runners which he was able to do passing the 300 Metres.

He said after obtaining clear running PABLOSKY then closed off the race well.

Mr J Moore, the trainer of PABLOSKY, stated that he anticipated this race would be run at a good tempo as there were a number of horses that had previously raced in a forward position and in particular he anticipated that LUCKY YEAR and HORSE OF FORTUNE, which were both ridden by apprentice jockeys, may race in the lead.

He said because LUCKY YEAR was drawn inside PABLOSKY, he had hoped that PABLOSKY would be able to take up a position behind that horse which if LUCKY YEAR led, this would result in PABLOSKY racing behind the lead and which would assist its chance of getting the 1400 Metres of today??s event.

He said the circumstances of the race in the early stages after LUCKY YEAR was crossed by WINNER??S WAY passing the 1200 Metres resulted in PABLOSKY racing further back in the field than had been intended.

After the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on HORSE OF FORTUNE at the request of Trainer A T Millard.

The Veterinary Surgeon reported that this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea.

Before being allowed to race again, HORSE OF FORTUNE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

A veterinary inspection of MIDNIGHT RATTLER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

WINNER??S WAY and HORSE OF FORTUNE were sent for sampling.
