Recap by phillip woo

Happy Life took the short route home after settling midfield to wear down favourite Jade Fortune inside the last 50m for a first win at his ninth start. He found the rise in trip perfect after putting the writing on the wall last start over the 1,200m and he might be able to ring up another. Jade Fortune made his run outside Happy Life, swept to the front with four wider out at the 150m and found one slightly better in the end. He's a winner waiting to happen over this Valley trip. Thunder Stomp led 350m out after stalking Mr Potential's fast pace from a wide gate and kept on well for a placing. It was a good run in defeat despite circumstances going against him. Apache Spirit closed off well from behind midfield to just miss a placing. He was suited by the race tempo but has hit the line well in his past two starts following a move to blinkers. Photon Willie closed off better travelling underneath Apache Spirit in the run. He might be nearing a bottom. Both The Supreme and Sichuan Boss were disappointing following lovely runs. The former appears to enjoy Sha Tin better, while the latter might need more time despite stepping up over a suitable distance.

Racing Incident Report

Race Four: (638)-HEREFORD HANDICAP - Class 3 - 1650Metres

YOUNG RANGER was withdrawn on 9.5.17 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter KYRUS BOWSER (Apprentice H T Mo).

Before being allowed to race again, YOUNG RANGER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

On arrival at the barriers, MR POTENTIAL was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said that after the necessary consultations the horse was suitable to race.

PHOTON WILLIE was slow to begin.

KYRUS BOWSER began awkwardly.

VARA PEARL shifted out at the start and bumped THUNDER STOMP.

After this, VARA PEARL was steadied and shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.

NITRO EXPRESS and APACHE SPIRIT were steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.

Passing the 1200 Metres, THE SUPREME commenced to travel keenly and got its head up.

Passing the 450 Metres, THE SUPREME and SICHUAN BOSS raced tight as THE SUPREME shifted out away from the heels of MR POTENTIAL which was commencing to give ground.

Near the 150 Metres, JADE FORTUNE shifted in and brushed HAPPY LIFE.

When questioned, K C Ng stated that he was asked to ride MR POTENTIAL positively from a wide barrier and accordingly, he rode the horse hard in the early stages to clear runners to his inside.

He said after being able to obtain the lead on the rail approaching the 1200 Metres, he immediately attempted to steady the tempo given the amount of work he had to do on MR POTENTIAL to lead.

He said, despite his attempts to steady the horse, MR POTENTIAL travelled keenly and would not settle and consequently the race was run at a faster tempo than anticipated.

K C Ng was advised that whilst the Stewards were satisfied that he had made an effort to steady the tempo on MR POTENTIAL after obtaining the lead, nonetheless he was asked to ensure that he makes every endeavour to rate his mounts so that they can finish off the race as best as they are able.

A veterinary inspection of MR POTENTIAL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

The performance of MR POTENTIAL, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable.

Before being allowed to race again, MR POTENTIAL will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

A veterinary inspection of SICHUAN BOSS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

HAPPY LIFE and JADE FORTUNE were sent for sampling.
