Recap by phillip woo

Grand Harbour couldn't clear from gate 13 to lead from early favourite Emperor Victory, claimed the front 700m out and was able to find enough to just hold Lansbury for the win after seconds in three earlier Class Four runs this term. He'll likely find it harder back in Class Three. Lansbury was closing the gap with every stride from behind midfield to finish a clear-cut second. He's has proven capable over the 1,200m to mile on both surfaces and won't be far off a win at this level. Super Euro Star finished up nicely after travelling second from the rear to fill a placing with a rise in trip. He has shown life signs in recent runs and may not need to drop into Class Five to win a race. Plunged late to jump the favourite Great Toplight produced a grinding effort following a prominent run. He had no excuses but would be an interesting play if he can get into Class Five in the future. Je Pense stayed on better travelling fore of midfield in his first outing on the surface. He's improving with racing. Emperor Victory gave up over the last 150m after sharing the lead for half the race on the fence. He'll be winning if he gets downgrade in the near future.

Racing Incident Report

Race Two: (455)-SEA EAGLE HANDICAP - Class 4 - 1650Metres

OSCAR MIRACLE began awkwardly and lost ground and then shortly after the start was bumped by ZOOMOOL which shifted out.

GREAT TOPLIGHT lost its left front plate at the start.

WINNING BOY, SUPER EURO STAR and THE FULL BLOOM were all shifted across behind runners in the early stages.

Near the 1500 Metres, GRAND HARBOUR got its head on the side, shifted in and bumped EMPEROR VICTORY, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced.

Approaching the 1200 Metres, WINNING BOY got its head up for some distance when awkwardly placed close to the heels of GLOBAL DOMINATION.

GLOBAL DOMINATION lost its left hind plate near the 1100 Metres.

At the entrance to the Straight, GREAT TOPLIGHT was awkwardly placed outside the heels of SEE ME NOW.

Approaching the 100 Metres, DIAMOND FRIENDS and JE PENSE raced tight.

Throughout the race, EXPEDITE travelled wide and without cover.

When questioned regarding his riding of EMPEROR VICTORY particularly after the 1200 Metres, Apprentice H N Wong stated that as EMPEROR VICTORY was carrying a light weight, he was asked to ensure that he took advantage of the horse??s inside draw and obtain the lead if possible.

He said whilst the connections were aware that GRAND HARBOUR, which had drawn a wide draw, would also be ridden forward, it was hoped that the rider of that horse would be content to race outside EMPEROR VICTORY given each horse??s respective barrier positions and the difference in the weight both horses were carrying.

He said he was further instructed not to restrain EMPEROR VICTORY too heavily as the horse had previously shown a tendency to get its head up in races when too much pressure was applied to its mouth.

He said in accordance with his instructions he rode his mount positively in the early stages to obtain the lead and felt that he had ridden his mount with sufficient purpose to indicate to the rider of GRAND HARBOUR of his intention to lead.

He said however that approaching the 1200 Metres GRAND HARBOUR commenced to improve forward of EMPEROR VICTORY and he therefore allowed EMPEROR VICTORY to stride forward to ensure that he maintained his position in the lead.

He added however that GRAND HARBOUR continued to press forward, but given his instructions, he was reluctant to steady EMPEROR VICTORY despite the knowledge that the race was being run at a faster tempo that had been hoped.

He said ultimately due to the tempo of the race he elected to steady EMPEROR VICTORY approaching the 700 Metres and allowed GRAND HARBOUR to cross as he felt that this would provide EMPEROR VICTORY with an opportunity to finish off the race.

Mr Y S Tsui, the trainer of EMPEROR VICTORY, confirmed his instructions and the reasons given to Apprentice Wong for his insistence that Apprentice Wong maintain the lead if possible.

He said however that he would have been comfortable for Apprentice Wong to have eased EMPEROR VICTORY so that the horse would not be obliged to run at a tempo that it was.

Apprentice Wong was advised that, in the opinion of the Stewards, he had erred after the 1000 Metres in not allowing GRAND HARBOUR to cross EMPEROR VICTORY given the manner in which the race was being run at that time.

He was advised that whilst the Stewards appreciated that he had been given firm instructions on how EMPEROR VICTORY should be ridden, nonetheless it is a requirement of jockeys that they exercise appropriate judgement and initiative so that their mounts are able to finish off the race as best as they are able.

A veterinary inspection of GLOBAL DOMINATION immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea.

Before being allowed to race again, GLOBAL DOMINATION will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

GREAT TOPLIGHT, GRAND HARBOUR and LANSBURY were sent for sampling.
