Recap by phillip woo

Win It wasn't able to menace in his opening four starts but sustained his move from the back 800m out to run down Giant Turtle 120m out for a fifth career win at his 49th start. He's a Valley specialist but will find things harder after this win. Giant Turtle found the front 200m out after covering ground near the speed the entire trip and kept on gamely for second. He's run well in back-to-back race this term for his new trainer and is ready to score. Happy And Healthy finished well following a midfield run. It was a second minor placing from three starts this term and he's near a bottom. Punted late, Mutual Joy made some ground travelling fore of midfield to snare a Quartet spot. It wasn't a bad run with a return to Class Four. Rapid Triumph was getting going late from behind midfield to make it close for fourth but was anchored by the weight. Favourite Newswire Free never fired from behind midfield. The rise in weight after a narrow win last start was the likely culprit.

Racing Incident Report

Race Four: (189)-NAKAYAMA HANDICAP (Sec1) - Class 4 - 1650Metres

When proceeding to the barriers, OSCAR MIRACLE lost its right front plate, resulting in the horse having to be replated.

After being replated, OSCAR MIRACLE was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race.

OSCAR MIRACLE began awkwardly and lost ground.

WEALTHY FORTUNE was slow to begin and then, despite being ridden along for a considerable distance, failed to muster speed.

For some distance in the early stages, BOSSIEE travelled keenly in the lead.

Rounding the Home Turn, HAPPY AND HEALTHY was awkwardly placed close to the heels of GREAT TOPLIGHT.

Passing the 300 Metres, HAPPY AND HEALTHY raced tight inside the heels of BOSSIEE.

Over the concluding stages, WIN IT got its head on the side and lay in under pressure.

Throughout the race, GIANT TURTLE travelled wide and without cover.

When questioned, J Moreira (NEWSWIRE FREE) stated that approaching the 800 Metres he was racing behind MUTUAL JOY and it was his intention to shift out after the 800 Metres into a position three wide to follow GIANT TURTLE.

He said as he commenced to shift out, WIN IT was ridden along and improved its position quickly to race outside NEWSWIRE FREE which then prevented him from being able to shift out.

He said he therefore remained racing behind MUTUAL JOY and after the 500 Metres NEWSWIRE FREE came under heavy pressure and was inclined to hang in.

He said because of the racing manners of NEWSWIRE FREE and the fact that the horse was not improving its position at this time, he rode the horse more aggressively than he otherwise would have in an endeavour to have it race tractably and finish off the race.

He added, despite being hard ridden, NEWSWIRE FREE would not respond to his riding for some distance in the early part of the Straight and it was not until near the 150 Metres that the horse commenced to close off the race.

He said over the final 100 Metres NEWSWIRE FREE then closed off the race well.

J Moreira was advised that, in the opinion of the Stewards, he had erred in not shifting out from behind MUTUAL JOY when the opportunity was available approaching the 800 Metres which resulted in the eventual winner WIN IT being able to improve its position to race behind GIANT TURTLE with cover.

J Moreira was also warned against using the whip in the manner he did on this occasion rounding the Home Turn.

A veterinary inspection of NEWSWIRE FREE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

A veterinary inspection of BOSSIEE and WEALTHY FORTUNE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

NEWSWIRE FREE, WIN IT and GIANT TURTLE were sent for sampling.
