Recap by phillip woo

Plunged late, Sir John settled one one off in second behind Noble Buddies, advanced to the front three deep at the 150m and kept on gamely for the win with a return to dirt in blinkers and a drop in class and distance. Flying Captain was always covered ground out deep from a wide gate behind midfield, made progress 550m out and finished well with two wider out to grab second in an improved run with a gear change and drop in grade. Lucky Bole improved his position from the rear of the field at the 500m and finished well widest out to get up close to home for a placing. Favourite Oriental Fantasia had no clear run until pulling outside the leader at the 150m following a box-seat run and kept on evenly thereafter. Lean Journey made some ground three deep after getting shuffled back to be fourth from the rear approaching the final bend. Noble Buddles went to the front from an outside gate, cornered just over a length on top and was stopping 150m out. Fabio failed to lift after a one-off run travelling fore of midfield despite a drop in grade. Masquerader only got by beaten rivals after travelling second from the rear following a tardy break. Surreal made no impression after travelling behind midfield along the fence.

Racing Incident Report

Race One: (620)-THE CHAIRMEN'S DAY HANDICAP - Class 5 - 1200Metres

After beginning only fairly, MASQUERADER then failed to muster speed in the early stages despite being vigorously ridden.

On the first turn near the 700 Metres, MASQUERADER shifted out and bumped LUCKY BOLE, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced.

Approaching the 600 Metres, ORIENTAL FANTASIA was steadied away from the heels of NOBLE BUDDIES.

Also approaching the 600 Metres, LEAN JOURNEY was steadied away from the heels of FABIO.

FLYING CAPTAIN was inclined to lay out in the middle stages when racing wide and without cover.

At the entrance to the Straight, ORIENTAL FANTASIA attempted to improve to the inside of NOBLE BUDDIES where there was doubtful room.

A short distance later, NOBLE BUDDIES shifted in slightly under pressure near the 300 Metres, obliging ORIENTAL FANTASIA to be steadied and shift to the outside of that horse to continue improving.

Throughout the race, MIGHTY GAINS travelled wide and without cover.

When questioned regarding the improved performance of the winner SIR JOHN, Trainer W Y So stated that after being disappointing over longer distances at its most recent starts, he had given the horse a freshen-up and with the drop back to Class 5 today and with blinkers reapplied on the All Weather surface, he had advised connections that he felt SIR JOHN was a strong chance as it would be able to take up its customary forward position in what he assessed as a weak race.

A veterinary inspection of FABIO immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea.

Before being allowed to race again, FABIO will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

ORIENTAL FANTASIA, SIR JOHN and FLYING CAPTAIN were sent for sampling.
