Recap by phillip woo

Thumped late in betting, Medallist settled midfield along the rails, pulled off heels five deep at the 200m and quickened nicely to grab victory 50m out. Fat Choy Hong Kong was kept deep until slotting one-out, one-back at the 1,200m, swung the final bend with two wider out and finished nicely to secure a Quinella spot. Royal Partner was patiently ridden second from the rear and was finishing with purpose down the far outside. Supreme Essence ran out of petrol after hitting the front 100m out following a pace-stalking run. Good Choice ran on from behind midfield without menacing. Crazy Buddies kept on one-paced after a dream run with blinkers applied. Favourite Invictus held the fence underneath Supreme Essence, cornered a long on top and was giving way 100m out. Circuit Star failed to let down following a midfield run with cover. Towering Storm never got going from the back.

SUPREME ESSENCE began awkwardly.

From the outside barrier, ROYAL PARTNER was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.

Rounding the Home Turn, GOOD CHOICE was directed to the inside of CIRCUIT STAR to obtain clear running.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of INVICTUS, J Moreira stated that although his mount did not fully relax in the middle stages, nonetheless he was comfortable with how INVICTUS was travelling as the horse was able to dictate the tempo of the race.

He said given the tempo of the race in the early and middle stages, he expected INVICTUS to quicken rounding the Home Turn, however, when placed under pressure, the horse immediately came off the bridle and then did not close off the race.

He said whilst INVICTUS was disappointing, the track conditions may have played a part in the horse"s performance.

A veterinary inspection of INVICTUS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
