Karis Teetan has been stopped in his tracks a day after riding a treble at Sha Tin, with the Mauritian sidelined for at least a week after a blood test on Monday morning revealed the jockey is suffering from thyrotoxicosis.

A condition in which you have too much thyroid hormone in your body, Teetan said he opted to undertake testing after feeling a little bit off recently.

“The last few days when I was working out I could feel that I wasn’t quite myself, my recovery was not the same and my heart rate was higher than usual,” Teetan said.

“If you produce too many thyroid hormones in your body, it makes your heart beat faster than usual.

“The way I felt, I just wanted to check my blood and this is what we found. I had some blood tests and I’ve got some thyroid problems, because of that the doctors have given me some medication and booked me off for Wednesday and Sunday just to rest a bit.

“I rode on Sunday, physically I’m fine, but if I don’t look after it now, later on it might give me more trouble. I don’t want to have a more severe problem down the line.

“It’s treatable, so hopefully I’m good in a week. We’ve found it early, the doctors have been good and I’m hoping to be back next week.”

After five winners across the first three meetings to trail only Zac Purton’s seven in the jockeys’ premiership, Teetan will miss out on six rides at Happy Valley on Wednesday night and a full book of 10 at Sha Tin this Sunday.

“It’s come just when things were starting to roll, but it’s never easy here, there’s always a mountain to climb,” Teetan said.

Six separate jockeys have picked up Teetan’s rides at the midweek meeting, with Zac Purton (Jade Phoenix), Lyle Hewitson (Pretty Queen Prawn), Alexis Badel (Wah May Luck), Harry Bentley (Polaris Winner), Jerry Chau Chun-lok (Spontaneous) and Vincent Ho Chak-yiu (Gang Of Brothers) stepping in to fill the void left by the 32-year-old.

While in Wah May Luck and Polaris Winner Teetan has only lost Class Five rides, their performances at the midweek meeting could be of far greater significance than usual as punters chase a share of a monster HK$37 million Triple Trio jackpot.

With Jockey Club programmers looking to inject as much uncertainty into the Triple Trio as possible, Wednesday night’s two cellar-grade contests will be races four and five – later in the card than Class Fives are traditionally found – to ensure their inclusion in the exotic.

Both look to be wide-open affairs and those punters who make it through the first two legs of the Triple Trio will be left to grapple with the Class Three Fortress Hill Handicap (1,650m).

While featuring only nine runners, the race looks to contain a number of chances, but it might be last-start bridesmaids Copartner Elites and Packing Famous who catch punters’ attention, as well as My Ecstatic from the inside alley.
