He has Group One glory in his sights on Champions Day this Sunday but first Karis Teetan has a book littered with winning chances at Happy Valley on Wednesday, and the small matter of becoming a father.

Teetan and his wife Xaviere were at hospital on Tuesday afternoon awaiting the birth of their first child – a baby girl expected to arrive some time on Tuesday night – and the Mauritian jockey confirmed he’ll definitely be fulfilling his commitments at the midweek meeting.

Two of his stand-out mounts are Francis Lui Kin-wai’s Scotch Tycoon in the Class Three Cha Kwo Ling Handicap (1,200m) and Packing Award for Peter Ho Leung in the Class Three Hang Hau Handicap (1,650m), with both gallopers shooting for a hat-trick of wins.

“Scotch Tycoon went up in class last start and with a rating of 62 he had a light weight, so I had the chance to pick up the ride and he had a good draw last time and he’s a young and improving horse,” Teetan said of Scotch Tycoon, who jumps from gate eight of 10 on Wednesday night.

“Packing Award has won his past two starts but in both runs we had different plans. Last time [from gate eight] he jumped and didn’t show any speed so I just rode him where he felt comfortable.

“At least this time we have a nice draw in gate three so I will just leave him where he comes out, you have to leave him where he is comfortable and he will give you his best.”

Teetan has ridden seven of Ho’s nine winners so far this season and hopes he can help the veteran trainer hit double figures at the midweek meeting.

“It’s nice to ride a few winners for Peter, he doesn’t have a big string of horses but he’s been giving me some good rides and I appreciate his support – it would be nice to ride a few more winners for him this season,” Teetan said.

Among Packing Award’s opponents is Rocket Spade, who finished 13th in last month’s Hong Kong Derby behind Teetan aboard the victorious Romantic Warrior.

Romantic Warrior will look to become the first galloper since Werther in 2016 to do the Derby-QE II Cup double in the same season when he lines up in the Group One this Sunday and Teetan is happy with how his charge is tracking towards the race.

“He’s going well. I wasn’t able to gallop him this morning but I did his trial and some of his work and I’m very happy with the horse,” Teetan said.

“He’s holding his condition pretty well after the Derby and he’s a horse who is going to show improvement in the future, so hopefully we see that in the QE II.”

Teetan also partners Master Eight (Chairman’s Sprint Prize) and More Than This (Champions Mile) in this weekend’s features.

“Master Eight has been running well, his last run I thought was a good run. Of course we respect Wellington and a few others in the race but I think he’s going to have his chance,” the jockey said.

“More Than This finished second in this race last year, next to Golden Sixty, and that was a very good run from him. He’s got the ability to do it but he just needs to come to the races in the right mindset.”
