Wah May Baby’s last win was a cup event at virtually the same Happy Valley meeting last year and he looks primed to repeat the dose in the Wayfoong Centenary Bowl (1,650m) on Wednesday night.
The meeting sees the return of Joao “Magic” Moreira and trainer Tony Cruz has him booked for a winning comeback on Wah May Baby, who should be at a peak after two very solid efforts back from the summer break.
On October 19 last year, Wah May Baby took out the Fakei Cup off a mark 10 points higher in the handicap and he has drifted down to Class Four recently without doing a whole lot wrong.
There was certainly nothing amiss with his second to Little Island over the same track and distance three weeks ago.
Jumping from barrier 12, he got over to a nice position for Matthew Chadwick and really did everything but win, fighting back strongly when challenged by Little Island to miss by only a head margin.
But the switch to an inside draw means Moreira won’t have to ask him for any early effort, and a more relaxed run in the early stages will keep Wah May baby’s powder dry for when it matters and should make the winning difference.
The race has no end of good pace in it and looks to suit the horse who will sit back off that speed then have something to offer in the last 200m, and the design of the race looks ideal for the six-year-old.
Still, it’s a reasonably competitive event with solid chances to a number of runners and Megatron (Karis Teetan) might have been worthy of favouritism from a better draw.
Teetan will have some decisions to make in the early stages about going forward or back – he has been racing forward lately but there won’t be any favours in that with front-runners like Grand Harbour, Five Stars Agent, Jimson The Famous and others underneath him at the gate.
