Paris Olympics day 15: boxer Li gives China 39 golds to lead medal race – as it happened
- US claim basketball and double 4x400m relay glory, while China win artistic swimming duet after clean sweeps in table tennis and diving
It feels as though we’ve been talking about a Chinese clean sweep of the diving events since the Paris Olympics began, many moons ago, and finally that day is here.
The men’s 10m platform was the last golden domino to fall, and with it came two fairly important moments in Games history. Not only did China become the first country to sweep the diving, but it surpassed the United States for the most golds won in the sport, hitting a nice round 50.
Clean sweeps are becoming something of a pattern for China in sports in which their athletes excel, and while Cao Yuan and Yang Hao were taking the plunge, the women’s table tennis team were looking to make it five from five in their final against Japan.
Success in both, and more in boxing and artistic swimming, took China up to 39 golds, and the country could do more than dream of leaving Paris top of the medal table.
Day 15 crept up on us in the blink of an eye, and once again we’ve been here to bring you live coverage of everything Olympics in the French capital.
